This operations course is intended to be a survey of the operating practices and procedures found in both manufacturing and service delivery firms. This course addresses the basic decisions leaders of operations must address: vertical integration, capacity, facilities, process technology, information technology, sourcing, business process management, capabilities development and supply chain integration. This course integrates strategic considerations with analytical models, thereby providing a comprehensive view of these critical decisions and the tools used to help make them. Operations strategy, addresses both questions of how a company should structure itself to compete in the complex global economy and of how it can develop the capabilities that underlie technological readiness, business sophistication, and innovation. Students will learn of recent research and study the most up-to-date examples of companies engaged in making these decisions.
