Course Description

This course is designed to provide an introduction to financial accounting from the users' perspective. Its primary purposes are to promote understanding of financial accounting information for decision-making purposes and to focus on financial accounting's role in communicating business results. This course helps students succeed by providing leading-edge accounting content that engages students, and with state- of-the-art technology. The focus of this course is on financial accounting concepts, principles, and analyses. It emphasize the preparation, analysis, and use of financial statement information for business decisions. While considerable importance is placed on evaluation, interpretation, and use of accounting data for decision making, the fundamentals of accounting measurement and disclosure are stressed. This entails a focus on current government and regulatory reporting requirements with consideration of their strengths and weaknesses. Such knowledge will enable students to participate in and manage the important accounting and reporting activities of a company – including information systems for entrepreneurial businesses. Financial statements from companies such as Best Buy, Circuit City, and Apple will be analyzed in order to engage students in comprehending the financial aspects of their annual reports.
